Welcome to the Cybersecurity Handbook

This guide aims to provide a clear and accessible introduction to cybersecurity concepts and terminology, raising awareness about common cyber threats and how to recognize them. It emphasizes the importance of every employee's role and responsibility in maintaining cybersecurity, offering practical guidance for preventing, detecting, and reporting cyber incidents. Additionally, it serves as a quick reference guide during a suspected cyber-attack, ensuring that employees are well-equipped to respond effectively.

"Practicing cybersecurity basics helps protect your business and reduce cyber attack risks"

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity involves protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks aimed at accessing, altering, or destroying sensitive data, extorting money, or disrupting operations. Effective measures reduce risks and prevent unauthorized exploitation. The Local Government Cybersecurity Act (F.S. 282.3185) mandates that local governments adhere to minimum standards and best practices, including those from the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

Importance of Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is crucial in safeguarding sensitive information, ensuring business continuity, and protecting against financial and reputational damage. As digital threats continue to evolve, maintaining robust cybersecurity measures is essential to secure our digital lives.

Protects Sensitive Data

Cybersecurity prevents unauthorized access to personal and financial information.

Ensures Business Continuity

Effective cybersecurity measures minimize disruptions caused by cyber-attacks.

Prevents Financial Loss

Cybersecurity helps avoid the costly consequences of data breaches and fraud.

Preserves Reputation everywhere

Protecting against cyber threats maintains the trust of customers and stakeholders.

Regulatory Compliance

Strong cybersecurity practices ensure compliance with legal and industry standards.

Safeguards from threats

Continuous cybersecurity efforts defend against evolving cyber threats.

"Did You Know? 95% of cybersecurity breaches are caused by human error. Stay informed, stay secure."

Human error is the weakest link in cybersecurity, making awareness and education essential. Simple actions like using strong passwords, being cautious of suspicious emails, and following security protocols can significantly reduce the risk of breaches. Remember, your vigilance is key to protecting sensitive information and maintaining a secure environment.

Your Role in Cybersecurity

Every individual plays a crucial role in maintaining cybersecurity by staying vigilant, following best practices, and promptly reporting any suspicious activity. Your actions directly contribute to protecting sensitive information and ensuring the security of the organization.

Control access

Put controls on databases with sensitive information. Limit access to a need-to-know basis, and only for the amount of time a vendor needs to do a job.

Use multi-factor authentication

This makes vendors take additional steps beyond logging in with a password to access your network — like a temporary code on a smartphone or a key that's inserted into a computer.

Secure your network

Require strong passwords: at least 12 characters with a mix of numbers, symbols, and both capital and lowercase letters. Never reuse passwords, don't share them, and limit the number of unsuccessful log-in attempts to limit password-guessing attacks.

Safeguard your data

Use properly configured, strong encryption. This protects sensitive information as it's transferred and stored.
